3 Summer care tips for your dog
As we enter the summer months and find ourselves soaking up every minute of sun we can, it’s important that we also take care of our dogs during this time. Whilst your dog will most likely want to bathe in the heat outside with you and your family, it is crucial to keep a close eye on them and ensure their comfort comes first in the warm weather. Here are a few tips you can follow as an owner to take care of your pooch this summer.
1. Keep your dog hydrated
Like humans, it is essential that your dog keeps hydrated if they are going to be sitting out in the sun with you. Whether you are sitting in the garden or out on a long walk, it's important to make sure that your dog always has constant access to water. Keep a large bowl on hand and a bottle of water to keep refilling throughout the day so you never run out.
2. Remember that dogs need shade too
Whilst you may not want to limit your dog’s time outdoors just because of the warm weather, it's important that you set up some shady areas so that they can join you whilst you relax in the sun. Sunshades, an umbrella or a canopy will all do the job to provide an easy escape for your furry friend to take a break from the sun whilst out in the garden with you.
3. Be mindful of when you go for walks
Often, dogs become more active in the summer months as they, like us, get excited by the sunshine and want to join in with the day’s activities. However, you need to be attentive to your dog’s needs when taking them out for exercise on a warmer day as dogs do not cope as well in the heat as us humans do. To avoid your pet overheating, consider planning your walks for cooler times in the day such as the early morning or late evening to ensure your dog’s safety without limiting their daily exercise.
