DEFRA-approved cattle scanning courses for non-veterinarians

Following on from very successful courses in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, 2017 and 2018  we are pleased to announce that our DEFRA-approved courses for non-veterinarians will be continuing to run throughout 2019. It is necessary to acquire DEFRA accredition in order to be able to legally perform internal ultrasound examinations on cattle. Successful completion of this course allows you to offer a professional cattle scanning service to others.

Please note that all of our courses will be taught using the Breedertec RKU10.

This course provides successful students the legal exception laid out in The Veterinary Surgery (Rectal Ultrasound Scanning of Bovines) Order 2010, allowing non-veterinarians to perform transrectal ultrasound examinations on cattle.

Day 1:
Registration and introduction to course
Introduction to Ultrasound Scanning
Physiology of reproduction and pregnancy - dissection

Day 2:
Anatomy of the bovine pelvic region
Operator hygiene and disease control
Animal welfare and cattle handling
Scanning - practical demonstration
Scanning - practical

Day 3:
Theory and physics of ultrasound
Description and demonstration of range of equipment: machine controls, maintenance and safety
Timing of scanning and system limitations
Record keeping
Paraprofessionals and the law
Scanning – practical

Day 4:
Scanning - practical and oral assessment
Written paper


Certification will be only awarded to candidates who have:
 

• Successfully completed and attended the full training course
• Successfully completed the practical and oral examination
• Passed the written paper at the end of the course
