Although used as a sign of celebration, fireworks and loud noises can be extremely stressful for your pets and can make them anxious. As a result of this, if you have dogs, you can expect crying, shaking, barking, and not wanting to be left alone. Here are a few ways to help your dogs cope with the noise and confusion:

Create a safe space

If you are aware that there may be fireworks going on, it is worth preparing a space that your dog can stay in where you can put some cosy blankets and their favourite toys to make them feel more at ease. It is worth closing any curtains to provide another layer of sound insulation, as well as stopping them from seeing the confusing colours and shapes in the sky.

Exercise your pet

Tiring your pooch out through taking them on a long walk and play throughout the day is a great way to get rid of any excess energy that could be used later on to run around and bark. A sleepy dog is less likely to get overly anxious and would be more rested (especially with soft blankets to lie in).

Have some familiar background noise

Putting on the television or the radio can provide a great distraction to the loud noises going on outdoors. You can even find specific dog-friendly sounds and visuals on YouTube that can help soothe and entertain your pet.

Use a thunder jacket

There is a reason that we feel more relaxed when we are in someone’s arms, and the same goes for dogs. A thunder jacket creates a soft pressure on their body to give them the feel of being supported and can be very effective in reducing anxiety. You can make your own out of some old clothes or find some in pet shops and vets.

Every dog acts differently and it’s up to you as its owner to make sure they are safe and supportive during the celebration season so the whole can enjoy it!
