Veterinary ultrasound and the breeding process – what you need to know before you start
If you’re a dog breeder or you’re thinking of getting into this area of the veterinary world, ultrasound imaging will play a critical role throughout the breeding process. Whilst utilising ultrasonography as a means to detect and establish pregnancy is frequently carried out, it also comes in useful even before fertilisation takes place. Two papers published in April 2018 of this year in The Veterinary Clinics of North America. Small Animal Practice discuss this in more detail, one from the male and the other from the female canine aspect: ‘Evaluation of Canine Sperm and Management of Semen Disorders’ by Kolster KA (2018 Apr 17) and ‘Breeding Soundness Examination of the Bitch’ by Barstow C et al., (2018 Apr 23). The abstracts for both are discussed here, but links to the full article can be accessed by clicking on the respective author’s name.
Both of these publications explore a use for ultrasound in assessing a number of characteristics important when considering breeding. The fertility in males can be looked at by examining semen and sperm, and ultrasound is used as an additional technique by which various criteria can be assessed. Moreover, the results of these tests can help to potentially correct any issues that could adversely affect infertility, ultimately improving the chances of breeding success.
It is also important to check that the bitch used for breeding is in good physiological condition with no underlying problems. A variety of tests can be carried out, with ultrasonography being one of them. One of the benefits of veterinary ultrasound is that it is rapid and non-invasive, and so could be classified as ‘nonsurgical’ for the purposes of the paper discussed. Having prior knowledge as to any likely issues will ultimately help in creating a positive outcome following breeding.
