THE EVER EXPANDING ABILITY OF ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGY HAS JUST GOT EVEN BIGGER
Hot off the press! Ultrasound technology has become ever more sophisticated with the advent of ‘5D ultrasound imaging technology’, as reported by Free Malaysia Today. We are all greatly familiar with the concept of 3D technology and even 4D technology, both of which are becoming ever more widespread in our daily lives. However, 5D technology may not be a term that you are familiar with, which may in part be attributed to the lack of a universal definition for such technology, particularly when referring to films.
Nevertheless, in relation to ultrasound, 5D technology released by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd has been dubbed as being a useful tool for ultrasound imaging during pregnancy. Termed the Samsung UGEO WS80, this scanner has been described as providing the user with ‘detailed digital accuracy’, and is both easy and quick to use and importantly has one very unusual feature - the ability to connect with the mobile phones of the mothers-to-be, resulting in the direct crossover of foetal images from the scanner to the mother (Free Malaysia Today).
Aside from the ability of ultrasound imaging to check the progress of a pregnancy, calculate the gestational age of a foetus and check for any apparent foetal abnormalities, ultrasound imaging is a way for expectant parents to ‘sneak a peek’ at their baby before it enters the world. Consequently, having a scanner that is able to send images directly to the mother’s mobile phone, ready to be proudly shown to relatives and friends is of great advantage to both the practitioner and the parents.
Furthermore, it follows that similar technology may also be of use to those using veterinary ultrasound, including breeders, farmers and veterinarians. It can be just as important for these users of veterinary ultrasound to have clear images of the unborn foetus. As an example, a breeder may want to pass such images on to the eventual owner of the unborn animal, whilst a veterinarian may want to check the foetus for any abnormalities before birth. Just as 5D ultrasound technology is readily available for humans, similar technology may become available for the animal world, and sooner than you think.
