Worcestershire - 7th of September 2019

Kent - 7th December 2019

With the exception of veterinary nurses, qualified obstetricians, or those otherwise professionally involved in veterinary care, all attendees of our level 2 course must have successfully completed our level 1 course (Introduction to Ultrasound). In order to get the most out of the day, it is also strongly recommended that you have at least 6 months' scanning experience between completing your level one and level two.

Our level two course is taught exclusively by Yvette Lovis, our professional sonographer. Topics covered include:

  • Real Time Ultrasound - revisited
  • M-Mode
  • Colour Doppler
  • Canine Embryology
  • Calculating Gestational Age
  • Normal Canine Anatomy
  • Hydrops
  • Incidental Findings
  • Cardiac Disease - a brief note

Whilst the focus of the day is on pregnancy diagnosis, other areas are covered in order to give students a broader understanding of ultrasound and to improve confidence and recognition of other structures and applications. You will not be taught about incidental findings (e.g. bladder stones, cardiac disease) for the purpose of diagnosing these conditions, but simply for your own awareness. Practical sessions will focus upon more advanced pregnancy diagnosis techniques, including calculations of gestational age through a variety of methods (biparietal diameter, crown-rump length, sac measurements), the foetal heartbeat, and unique features of different breeds.

Please call us on 0208 432 9802 for more information, or book online now to reserve your place.

About Yvette

Yvette Lovis qualified as a radiographer in 1989 at Christ Church College Canterbury, graduating with a Diploma in Diagnostic Radiography. Whilst working at Maidstone, she simultaneously studied at Kingston University where she graduated with an Honours degree in Diagnostic Radiography. From this point, she then took a psychology course and became involved in teaching students on a module called ‘Psychology Of The Patient’.

In 1996, Yvette graduated from Portsmouth University with a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound. She accepted a research post at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup, working in Women and Children’s health. She was involved with research carried out by the Fetal Medicine Foundation in uterine artery Doppler screening for pre-eclampsia and preterm labour screening.

Yvette has been working in obstetric and gynecology ultrasound since 1998, taking a year to update her skills in general ultrasound in 2009. Since then, she has been working for the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS trust in Women’s and Children’s health, teaching ultrasound skills to a range of staff, from registrars, gynae nurses and midwives.

Yvette’s fondness of all things canine started about 10 years ago, when she started boarding guide dogs for ‘Guide Dogs for the Blind.’ An easy and cheap way of having a dog, providing you abide by guide dog rules and don’t mind saying goodbye after 3 months! In 2013, a colleague asked Yvette if she would be interested in teaching dog breeders to scan, and she jumped at the challenge.

The level 2 course is the result of Yvette’s enjoyment of teaching level 1, fuelled by dog breeders’ enthusiasm to learn how to use ultrasound in a professional way.
