POLYPHENOLS AND DEGENERATIVE DISEASES WITHIN THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

It is time for something a little bit different over the next few weeks. We will be taking a brief departure from our veterinary topics and looking at research focusing on the use of polyphenols, which can be both naturally occurring but can also be created artificially (Wikipedia).  The effects of polyphenols on degenerative and cardiovascular conditions will be looked at in more detail using two published research studies.

IS THERE A ROLE FOR CANINE VETERINARY ULTRASOUND IN A DIAGNOSTIC SETTING?

IS THERE A ROLE FOR CANINE VETERINARY ULTRASOUND IN A DIAGNOSTIC SETTING?

The use of veterinary ultrasound to diagnose various health-related conditions is well understood. In addition, it is also useful in helping the practitioner to decide on the next best course of action, a concept which will be explored further this week.

BATTY ABOUT ULTRASONOGRAPHY

BATTY ABOUT ULTRASONOGRAPHY

Previous articles have described how ultrasound is used by the animal kingdom. Bats are an example of one type of animal that uses ultrasonic waves as an aid whilst hunting for food, and will be used as the basis for this article. There are many different kinds of bats, but the information contained here is based on studies carried out on Myotis capaccinii, from a research paper by Aizpurua O et al., ‘Fine-tuned echolocation and capture-flight of Myotis capaccinii when facing different-sized insect and fish prey’, 2014, The Journal of Experimental Biology 217 pp3318-3325, published by The Company of Biologists Ltd.

EQUINE LYMPHOMA AND ULTRASOUND IMAGING

EQUINE LYMPHOMA AND ULTRASOUND IMAGING

Any equine veterinarians or breeders are likely to want as good an understanding as possible to spot any potential conditions or diseases that could affect their horses throughout their lifetimes. There are a number of techniques that help to increase our current knowledge of veterinary-related ailments and as has been previously discussed on our website, veterinary ultrasound is one such way in which to do this.

ANIMAL FEED NEED NOT BE 'BOARING’

ANIMAL FEED NEED NOT BE 'BOARING’

This week we look at a slightly more ‘alternative’ role for ultrasonography within the veterinary species. Instead of using ultrasound waves to take images of the animal in question, ultrasound is used in swine food instead. Confused? Don’t be, just read on and all will become clear!
