GETTING EXTRA FOR YOUR VETERINARY ULTRASOUND SCANNING EQUIPMENT
It has been said that the key to a good outfit is in the ‘extras’ – bags, jewellery, shoes etc… The same can also be indirectly applied to veterinary ultrasound, and whether you are an experienced scanner or just starting out on your ultrasound journey it is important to think carefully about everything you may need.
CARRYING OUT ULTRASONOGRAPHIC PROCEDURES UNDER ANAESTHETIC – IS IT ADVISABLE?
When attempting to carry out veterinary ultrasound, it is important to consider how best to examine the patient with minimal distress. Whilst some patients are able to be assessed in a ‘live’ state, others may require some form of sedation.
CATTLE SCAN COURSE: 4TH APRIL 2016
Our next DEFRA-approved cattle scan course is scheduled for the 4th of April in Gloucestershire. Places are limited and going fast, so please call us on 0208 432 9802 or book online here if you are interested in attending.
This 4-day course includes three half-day practical scanning sessions, and five classroom sessions, covering the reproductive anatomy of the cow and the oestrous cycle (assessing the ovaries an uterus), stages of pregnancy, basic ultrasound physics, equipment operation and hygiene, and paraprofessionals and the law. Completion of this course grants you DEFRA exemption, meaning you are legally permitted to carry our internal pregnancy scans on cattle.
IS THERE A ROLE FOR CANINE VETERINARY ULTRASOUND IN A DIAGNOSTIC SETTING?
The use of veterinary ultrasound to diagnose various health-related conditions is well understood. In addition, it is also useful in helping the practitioner to decide on the next best course of action, a concept which will be explored further this week.

BATTY ABOUT ULTRASONOGRAPHY
Previous articles have described how ultrasound is used by the animal kingdom. Bats are an example of one type of animal that uses ultrasonic waves as an aid whilst hunting for food, and will be used as the basis for this article. There are many different kinds of bats, but the information contained here is based on studies carried out on Myotis capaccinii, from a research paper by Aizpurua O et al., ‘Fine-tuned echolocation and capture-flight of Myotis capaccinii when facing different-sized insect and fish prey’, 2014, The Journal of Experimental Biology 217 pp3318-3325, published by The Company of Biologists Ltd.
