SHOULD WE MAKE THE SWITCH TO EMBRYO TRANSFER?
Gone are the days where a natural conception was the only way to become pregnant thanks to the advent of treatments such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and embryo transfer. IVF is where the egg is fertilised outside the body, i.e. in vitro by sperm, whereas embryo transfer describes the process by which embryos are transferred back into the uterus in order to result in pregnancy. These methods may be used for a number of reasons, particularly if the individuals in question are unable to have children naturally.
ULTRASOUND IMAGING AND THE EQUINE LIVER
Returning to my equine roots this week, the use of ultrasonography for liver visualisation (carried out by the Royal Veterinary College – my old haunting ground!) will be discussed. All information contained here has been taken from the abstract from a paper by Johns IC and Miles A, ‘Ultrasonographically visible hepatic location in clinically normal horses’, Australian Veterinary Journal, 2016 Jun: 94(6):192-6 and the full article can be accessed by clicking here.
THE FELINE IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS (FIV) AND WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM RESEARCH STUDIES
The human immune system can succumb to any number of bacterial or viral infections and as a result, scientific research is constantly attempting to uncover new treatments and/or cures that could aid the sufferer. One such way to do this is to draw parallels with similar conditions in animals, in order to gain a more thorough understanding of how disease can progress and how the physical body is affected.
WHAT IS STRIDULATION, AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR?
Veterinary ultrasound can be applied both visually (via ultrasound imaging) or audibly (as a form of communication within the animal kingdom). A slightly unconventional example of the latter can be seen following an investigation on a particular mammal called the tenrec, creatures that show similarities to hedgehogs, opossums and mice, to name but a few (Wikipedia).
COMPARATIVE STUDIES AND THE LINK BETWEEN ANIMAL AND HUMAN STUDIES
Using animal models for research is a method employed by scientists for a variety of reasons – the results retrieved can shed light on the physiological processes of the animal itself, whilst conclusions can also be drawn comparatively between the research model and other animals/humans. Comparative science is a useful tool that broadens the current understanding of how specific biological mechanisms are carried out by using one particular species as a research model.
DRAMINSKI-ISCAN-GOGGLES
After considerable research and development, the new Draminski iScan goggles are finally available. Our students put them through their paces at our bovine ultrasound training course earlier this month.
